My Global Experience

I joined Model UN in the fall semester of my sophomore year. While I had a general interest in global affairs, I mostly joined because I liked my first impression of the team. As a new student at UW Oshkosh, I was mainly looking for a group of like-minded people to surround myself with to make my experience more fulfilled and hopefully, gain lifelong friendships. As I went to meetings, I was inspired by the amount of passion that the experienced people had for global diplomacy. It was a challenging year for them to teach us first-years, as the long-time advisor of Model UN, Dr. Ken Griebe, had passed away during the summer. While I never personally met him, I could see his legacy directly through his students. To my surprise, I learned that I was actually pretty good at the simulation that Model UN is. I have always enjoyed public speaking and there is a ton of it at conferences. Writing speeches and delivering them with conviction was a skill that I drastically refined through my time on the team. During my first year, I proudly represented Brazil at Midwest Model United Nations (MMUN) in St. Louis and Gabon at National Model United Nations (NMUN) in New York City. During my second year, I represented Denmark at MMUN, and if it had not been canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic, Botswana at NMUN.

Each of these conferences took a ton of preparation, whether it was intensely researching about our countries, our topics, prewriting speeches, or learning to work as a team. Model UN at UW Oshkosh has dubbed the slogan “A tradition of excellence.” This tradition is carried on by dedicated students that put their all into these competitions and I am proud of my individual growth and our success as a team during my two-year tenure.

Reflection

Model UN drastically has altered my life, through my personal growth and future goals. For starters, the connections that I made and the knowledge I accrued allowed me to pursue my current internship with Oshkosh Corporation. If I had strictly had a marketing background, I don’t believe this opportunity would have been presented because of the global scope of our work and regulatory research that the job involves. Through my experience with Model UN and my global scholar courses, I was able to diversify myself into having more of an international business focus, which I have now found to be my passion for the future. For example, "Global Marketing" exposed me to creating a marketing mix and doing business analysis on a foreign business by understanding exchange rate differences, cultural differences, etc. This is the reason that I decided to stay with Oshkosh Corporation and have accepted a full-time role with Oshkosh Defense as an Industrial Security Specialist, which is in the same legal department as my current internship. I am hoping to progress with the company into the future, with a main goal of working for their international business department.

On the personal side, being a global scholar and participating in Model UN broadened my knowledge of the world. For example, "Politics of Development" exposed me to the history of development throughout the globe and why certain countries prosper, while others are ridden with war, corruption, malnutrition, etc. Being from a small town, it can be hard to venture outside the state, let alone the country. I now truly see how interconnected our world has become and have developed a passion for traveling and learning about new cultures. I have also worked on a lot of personal development skills such as presenting in front of large groups, public speaking, collaborating within a team, and thoroughly researching. I believe these skills are transferable to other career fields, which creates more opportunities for the future beyond just my work experiences or field of study. I am privileged to have been able to experience the global scholar program at UW Oshkosh and now feel I have the skills to be a well-informed global citizen.
